Making Mr Right (1987)

Quirky satire that was Susan Seidelman's next movie after her big hit, Desperately Seeking Susan. John Malkovich plays both an inventor and the android he has created, while Ann Magnuson is a wacky PR whizz hired to promote the robot but soon, wouldn't you know it, falling in love with it. Worse still, it reciprocates. It's all zany stuff, combining shades of vintage B-movies with punk hairstyles and postmodern sensibilities. Yes, plenty of invention, in every sense, but ultimately less than the sum of its rather too diverse parts.
