In the 1970s, Australia's Finnis River was menaced by "Sweetheart", a five-metre saltwater crocodile who made headlines after attacking a series of fishing boats. This outback horror thriller takes the facts and embellishes them into an entertaining creature feature in which a boat-load of tourists are chased and chomped by a reptilian Jaws. Letting the tension build with admirable skill, director Greg McLean (Wolf Creek) follows Spielberg by keeping the monster off-screen for as long as possible while we get to know the characters (including Michael Vartan's American travel writer and Radha Mitchell's feisty tour guide). Ticking off all the requirements of a decent B-movie - including a rather ropey-looking CGI crocodile - Rogue eschews the tongue-in-cheek humour of predecessors Alligator and Lake Placid. Instead it delivers more straight-ahead scares, culminating in an anxious journey into the croc-killer's subterranean lair. It's good fun, if a little lacking in bite.
