With its dizzy set designs and flamboyant costumes, Joseph Losey's misguided screen adaptation of Peter O'Donnell's seminal cartoon strip is a paean to the excesses of the mid-1960s. The years have not been kind, however, and the film now exists in a pop art time-bubble of its own making - unlike, say, the Bond movies it hopelessly apes. In a plot that makes virtually no sense, Monica Vitti is miscast as the sexy female spy, a sort of earthbound Barberella out to thwart effete arch fiend Dirk Bogarde. The latter has a ball in his silver wig and sunglasses, while Terence Stamp turns up somewhere as Modesty's bed-hopping accomplice. Camper than a lift of Graham Nortons, this was deservedly lambasted upon release, though that hasn't quelled repeated rumours of a possible remake.
